Widening the Path: An Overview of Philanthropy’s Role in Supporting Indigenous Peoples

This report outlines the role of private philanthropy in supporting Indigenous Peoples, emphasizing the urgent need to expand funding, particularly for those in the Global South who face significant violence, dispossession, and exclusion.

The Philanthropic Landscape

Despite their critical role in global issues, Indigenous Peoples receive a negligible fraction of international philanthropic funding. Potential funders often hesitate, citing a lack of expertise, knowledge, or clear entry points, alongside an underappreciation of the impact such funding can achieve. However, foundations currently supporting Indigenous organizations can act as catalysts, helping peers overcome these barriers by providing information and clarifying funding needs.
